The practice of veiling is integral to all three monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) as well as to other religious and cultural traditions (the Amish for example). While veiling continues to be practiced and associated more often with Islam and Muslim women than with other religious traditions, we will show in this section that if we look at the religious texts themselves and at their traditional readings, veiling is prescribed on women of all faiths.

In this section, we present some of the central religious textual bases that are invoked to justify the injunction to veil in Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
