In the past decade, music performers of Muslim descent have joined other artists in actively challenging and transforming stereotypical views of Muslim women and veiling. Most of the performers who sing about the meaning of veiling and who seek to challenge the conventional perception that Muslim women are oppressed and forced to cover live and perform in Muslim-minority societies. Their artistic production spans multiple musical traditions: hip hop, reggae, pop, and spoken word.
